To stay healthy, dogs need plenty of exercise to live a healthy and happy life. It also helps keep your dog out of trouble. Outdoor activities for dogs are great for them to get their exercise, while also getting a breath of fresh air.
If your dog isn’t used to being outside often or for long periods of time, ease into it. Start out slowly and take breaks often. Don’t let your dog get too cold or too hot, and especially not dehydrated.
Spend some time outdoors with your dog by trying one of these activities.
Go Camping or Hiking
Dogs naturally enjoy exploring. They’re curious creatures. Camping is a great way to experience the great outdoors with your furry friend.
You should consider purchasing a dog tent, which are literally tents made for dogs. If your dog likes to dig or bite things, a pup tent might not be the best idea. But if your dog knows how to behave, consider trying one.
Hiking can go hand in hand if you’re on a wilderness getaway. You and your dog will get plenty of exercise when taking a nice hike. Remember to have a dog leash handy, especially if your dog likes to wander off.
Additionally, take plenty of water and food when you go camping or hiking. You don’t need yourself or your pup getting hungry or dehydrated.
Swimming Is a Great Outdoor Activity for Dogs
Swimming doesn’t stress the joints of dogs. This means it’s great for your older pets as well as your younger ones.
Not only that, but it works many muscles at once making it a great source of exercise. Be mindful that not all dogs are natural swimmers, but many can easily get the hang of it.
Dogs can swim in chlorinated pools, despite the concern. Just keep an eye on them. Even swallowing some of the water won’t hurt them. While the chlorine may cause some discoloration in their coat, a simple bathing afterwards will return it to normal.
On the other hand, the ocean can be more dangerous. There are risks of jellyfish stinging your pooch or riptides sweeping them out. If you do go into the ocean with your dog, be extra attentive.
Visit a Dog Park
Dog parks can be a blessing for your pet. They allow you and your dog to play outside without them being on a leash. If there are other socializing dogs around and savvy dog owners at the park, it makes it all the better.
These parks are strongly fenced so your mischievous dog can’t escape. They can run freely while you play with them. Large dog parks seem to have enough room for unlimited running.
Remember to do your part in cleaning up after your dog. If you don’t remember poop bags, many parks provide them. Additionally, remember some of the courteous etiquette before taking your dog:
- Your dog should be healthy and up-to-date on all vaccinations.
- Only bring the amount of dogs you can handle.
- Keep your dog in line. Don’t let them bully other dogs, bark excessively, or bother people that wish to be left alone.
- Judge other dogs to the best of your ability. Don’t make you or your dog uncomfortable just for some outdoor time.
- If your dog is female and she is in heat, don’t take her.
- As mentioned earlier, clean up after your dog.
