Grooming your cat is important. It keeps them clean while helping to prevent fleas and ticks from nesting. The Himalayan cat is not an exception.
This breed of cat is very hairy around the eyes and requires special care. Unlike most cat breeds, they need to be groomed routinely and thoroughly.
The Himalayan Cat
Himalayan cats are long-haired cats with blue eyes, cream colored bodies and dark colored points on the ears, face, paws and tail.
Since the sloped nose can cause additional tearing beneath a cat’s eyes, extra care is necessary.
Sleep residue, dirt and debris can build up below the eyes, causing a crust to build up. Because of this, it is important to regularly clean a Himalayan’s eyes.
Brushing & Grooming
Regular brushing is an important component of eye care for Himalayan cats. It is important to consider this before getting this breed.
If crusts form under the eyes, combing hair around the Himalayan cat’s eyes may help some. A small brush that has teeth with small gaps is best to use for this purpose.
A flea comb can also be sufficient for this purpose. A makeup brush that is meant for grooming eyebrows can also work.
Routine Care
It is important to set up a regular grooming routine for the Himalayan cat. Regular brushing can prevent knots and tangles in the Himalayan’s coat.
It is also a good time to clean a Himalayan’s eyes. Practice daily eye care to your pet’s regular grooming routine.
Eye care for Himalayan cats is much easier if routine care is practice. After brushing the cat, a damp cloth or cotton ball should be used to remove buildup from beneath the eyes.
Hair can prevent moisture from getting to the cat’s eyes and make them tear. Clip hair away from the eyes to keep it from irritating it.
There are tear stain removers that are available at local pet stores. Follow the specific directions prior to using these solutions.
It is not a good idea to use shampoos for removing tear stains. Cats are sensitive and can be harmed for shampoo if it gets in the eyes.
If you notice signs of allergies to products you use when grooming, consult a veterinarian and stop using the product.
